A Look Back

The Kiwanis Club of Schenectady received its International Charter as Kiwanis Club #138 on May 15, 1919, with 90 charter members.

Kiwanis International celebrated its 100th Year on January 21, 2015, and The Kiwanis Club of Schenectady celebrated ours on May 15, 2019, just four and a half years later. We continue to serve our community’s youth through a spirit of volunteerism and service.

Thanks to our members, we’ve been able to hold on to a great deal of our history. Here are some of our memories.

This is a copy of the proclamation from Mayor McCarthy on the occasion of our 100th anniversary, celebrating some points of history.

Here’s a Throwback Thursday from Feb. 28, 2018… Schenectady Chief of Police Eric Clifford is flanked by speaker chair Mike Della Rocco and president Kathleen Fialkowski after his presentation at a noontime Kiwanis luncheon. Chief Clifford discussed a new model for Community Policing to boost the consistency in police personnel in our neighborhoods. He also received questions about policing, changes in the department and working with the new casino. #ThrowbackThursdaySchenectady Police Department

Did you go to see the fantastic Monet exhibit at the Schenectady Armory? Then today’s Throwback Thursday may be of special interest! In March of 2016, Ray Legere, owner of the Schenectady Armory, came to speak to Schenectady Kiwanis. He discussed the emergence of his facility as a sports arena after doing some renovating by placing turf inside the building to accommodate such programs as indoor soccer. He discussed his vision for Schenectady’s future as an entertainment venue including Proctors, the Armory and Mohawk River Casino (then under construction). Today the Armory is known as Armory Studios and it hosts events like the immersive Monet exhibit and Dino’s Alive. Presenting a certificate of appreciation are Kathleen Fialkowski, President and Nick Barber, Speaker Chair for the Month of March. #throwbackthursdays Armory Studios NY
